The tragic deportation of the Acadians in 1755 was only the end of one chapter of Acadian history. During the 1760s, over 2000 Acadians who had suffered imprisonment rather than being banished from their homeland were finally set free and allowed to settle in unoccupied areas of the Matitimes. They took root in a handful of communities and began to rebuild their lost land of Acadia.
Chezzetcook was one of the communities born during 1760s, and it was instrumental in the survival of the Acadians as a people. In this volume, Ronald Labelle writes of the Acadian culture of Chezzetcook, past and present, creating this fresh look at one of the oldest Acadian communities in Canada.
Ronald Labelle is a folklorist and historian who works at the University of Moncton's Centre d'études acadiennes. He has also edited a volume of Helen Creighton's collected Acadian folk songs.
